Emi Brown
    Emi Brown

Emi recently graduated from the UH West Oahu campus with a degree in Accounting. This, in itself is noteworthy, but the impressive part is WHEN and HOW she did it!

Though she has been through several setbacks, Emi had been a life-long learner for many years before deciding to start her quest for a college degree. She was also working full time while taking care of her daughter, AND graduated WITH DISTINCTION! Now THAT is amazing!!!

Emi has been training with HSK for 4½ years and is a 4th kyu purple belt at HSK. She has been training hard steadily, and anxiously anticipates taking her brown belt exam.

The best to you, Emi!

Senpai Cliff and Sensei congratulate Emi on her graduation!

Up Close and Personal!

Emi graduated from UH West Oahu in May 2025 with a degree in Accounting!

1.    Why, at this time in your life, did you decide to get a college degree?

My academic journey was marked by setbacks and moments of doubt. Counseling sessions with a psychologist and life coach played a pivotal role in helping me shift my perspective, reigniting my commitment to earning my degree. The chance to step into an entry-level accounting role at my company further solidified my decision—aligning my studies with my long-term aspirations. What started as an administrative assistant role in 2016 eventually led me to become an accounting manager.

2.    What has kept you going?

Above all, my daughter's well-being has been my greatest source of motivation. As her closest and most reliable family member in the U.S., ensuring her security remains my top priority. Additionally, I find both energy and focus through studying and Karate training at HSK. While work can be exhausting, Karate serves as a powerful form of rejuvenation, reinvigorating me and driving me to excel in my studies, career, and personal life. I am continually inspired by Sensei and Senpais, whose dedication to providing high-quality training at the dojo fuels my determination in all aspects of life.

3.    Graduating in itself is great, but you did it “With Distinction”!   That is AMAZING!!!

What did you have to go through?

Earning 'With Distinction' required significant sacrifices—I had to drastically limit social activities, relaxation, exercise, and entertainment, dedicating my evenings and free time entirely to school assignments. Balancing this commitment with my responsibilities as a parent was challenging, but ultimately rewarding, as it strengthened my ability to think critically and adapt. The most difficult trade-off was the limited time I had with my daughter during her younger years, and in hindsight, I wish I had approached those moments with a more relaxed mindset. This experience deepened my appreciation for balance, reminding me that success isn’t just about achievement, it’s about making time for what truly matters.

4.    What are your plans now?

Now, my focus is on maximizing the return on my investment through continuous self-development. There is still so much more to learn, and I strive to grow as a parent and an individual, to contribute meaningfully to my community. I plan to achieve this through reading, listening to podcasts, taking online classes, and continuously refining and expanding my skills and knowledge. Karate remains a priority, as I admire Sensei’s sleek movements while exploring new ways to strengthen my body. And I'm thrilled about catching up on household tasks—organizing, cleaning, and experimenting with new recipes. With school behind me, I can fully embrace these passions and invest in my personal growth.
